Victimology also explores the role of victims in the criminal justice system and the alternatives to the traditional punitive approach.

One of the alternatives to the traditional criminal justice system is restorative justice, which is a process that involves the participation of victims, offenders, and community members in repairing the harm caused by crime and restoring the relationships among them. Restorative justice aims to promote healing, accountability, and reconciliation, rather than retribution and isolation. Restorative justice can take various forms, such as victim-offender mediation, family group conferencing, circle sentencing, or community reparations.

Another alternative to the traditional criminal justice system is peacemaking criminology, which is a perspective that draws on the principles and practices of peace studies, such as nonviolence, dialogue, forgiveness, and social justice. Peacemaking criminology challenges the assumptions and methods of conventional criminology, which are based on conflict, domination, and coercion. Peacemaking criminology seeks to understand the root causes of crime and violence, such as inequality, oppression, and alienation, and to address them through transformative and holistic solutions that foster harmony and well-being.

A third alternative to the traditional criminal justice system is shaming, which is a technique that uses social disapproval or condemnation to deter or correct deviant behavior. Shaming can be either reintegrative or stigmatizing. Reintegrative shaming is a process that expresses disapproval of the offender’s actions while affirming his or her worth as a person and offering opportunities for reintegration into the community. Stigmatizing shaming is a process that labels and isolates the offender as a bad person and excludes him or her from the community.

These alternatives to the traditional criminal justice system have different advantages and disadvantages for victims. Restorative justice can provide victims with a sense of empowerment, satisfaction, closure, and healing. It can also reduce their fear, anger, and trauma. However, restorative justice can also pose some risks for victims, such as revictimization, coercion, or manipulation by offenders or facilitators. Peacemaking criminology can offer victims a broader and deeper understanding of crime and violence, as well as a vision of a more peaceful and just society. It can also inspire victims to become agents of change and social transformation. However, peacemaking criminology can also be seen as unrealistic, idealistic, or naive by some victims who may prefer more concrete and pragmatic solutions. Shaming can have different effects on victims depending on its type and context. Reintegrative shaming can enhance victims’ dignity, respect, and support from the community. It can also reduce their resentment and desire for revenge. However, stigmatizing shaming can increase victims’ humiliation, isolation, and stigma. It can also reinforce their sense of injustice and victimhood.
