Discussion Thread: Video Blog – Professional Counseling Skills
After reviewing the material in Chapters 8 and 9 of the text (readings and videos), address the following prompts in your video blog:
- Are the sessions you watched similar to what you imagined a counseling session to be? Why or why not?
- From your readings in Chapters 8 and 9, what skills and counselor characteristics did you notice?
- Which theoretical orientation(s) do you see may be present in these approaches?
- If you were to pose a question to one of the counselors in the videos to learn more about what they did/didn’t do, what would it be?
- Read: Simmons, Lilley, & Kuhnley: Chapters 8 — 9 and watch videos
- Your video thread must demonstrate a clear and coherent flow of thought.

Throughout the CMHC program, you will be required to record video discussions in your classes. While the general instructions provided in the class state you can use different options for this (e.g., YouTube), the preferred option for counseling courses is Kaltura. Kaltura is the HIPPA-compliant platform you will use during intensive and fieldwork courses when you record your work practicing skills and working with clients, so it is best to get familiar with it now. Also, note that it is much more reliable to record outside of Canvas in Kaltura, upload to your My Media account, and then embed the recording in the discussion from there. Please contact the Liberty University IT HelpDesk if you experience any technology issues.
Review the rubric for each video blog discussion by clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner of the discussion thread and clicking ‘show rubric’. Video blog discussions can vary in requirements, so it is important to do this for each video blog discussion. It is required to be on camera and to present yourself professionally while you address the discussion prompt and reply to others’ posts.
